English Language Arts: Figurative Language in Literature

Activity Idea: Have students write a short essay analyzing a literary device in a work of fiction, making sure to include several examples from the text. Later, have students provide feedback on another student’s essay by using the Comment tool.

Tip: Students can use the Note tool or use the Add File tool to import their essay from their Google Drive or Dropbox. Before letting students comment, discuss what a "good" comment looks like as a class. Check out Common Sense Media's Digital Citizenship Curriculum if you need a starting point.

Supports Common Core: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.11-12.4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the language evokes a sense of time and place; how it sets a formal or informal tone).
